Fort Christanna Historical Site

Brunswick County – One of the 53 sites along the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail®.  In 1714, Governor Alexander Spotswood began construction of Fort Christanna on Virginia’s western frontier. The five-sided fort was built to defend the local settlers and allied Indian tribes. Fort Christanna was built on land set aside for the Saponie and Occaneechee Indians. Fort Christanna is now a historical and recreational park open daily to the public.
